By the time they found the house, David's fingers had gone numb around the neck of the wine bottle.

The GPS had announced their arrival twice, sending them up one blind hill after another. Now the brass numerals beside the door matched the address on his phone. The house was stone and cedar, its wide windows catching what remained of the daylight.

"Here," he said.

Molly looked from his phone to the house. A folder of pledge cards rested on her lap. She had run advancement at Harbor Street for four years. Most evenings after an event, she told David which part of his pitch she would have to repair.

"You're sure?"

"Unless they moved and forgot to tell us."

"Budget doesn't have a line item for getting lost in the elbow."

"Budget doesn't have a line item for anything."

The wind cut across the driveway. By the time David reached the doorbell, the bottle felt loose in his cheap leather gloves.

The chime descended through four slow notes.

Warm air came through the doorway with the smell of garlic, lemon, and something browning in butter.

"You must be the Hales," the woman said.

She wore a gray cardigan, her hair pinned at the back of her head.

"Elaine," she said, stepping aside. "You didn't have to bring anything."

"We wanted to." David became aware of the supermarket label on the Cabernet.

Elaine accepted it with both hands. "Graham will be delighted. Come in. You must be freezing."

The door closed behind them with a padded click. Family photographs climbed the wall beside the staircase: babies in knitted hats, a teenager in a crimson graduation gown, a woman riding a bicycle on a sun-bleached road.

Between a photograph of sailboats and a wedding portrait hung a small clay heart on a faded ribbon. It had been broken down the middle and rejoined with a line of gold. On the front, in a child's cramped capitals, were the words:

David reached up and straightened it.

Elaine followed his gaze. "Is that from you?"

"From our Holiday Shop. One of the second-graders made it."

For a moment he heard the cafeteria as it had sounded that afternoon: chairs scraping, children shouting over one another, Elena trying to keep glue out of the carpet. She had brought in the repair kits and explained that the gold was not supposed to hide the break. The second-graders had listened with grave attention, then begun snapping clay hearts in half.

"Graham brought it home after his visit," Elaine said. "He said it was his favorite thing in the building."

Molly touched the ribbon. "Elena came up with the project. She coordinates family engagement for us."

"The gold was her idea?"

"The whole thing was."

Elaine looked again at the uneven seam. "It's beautiful."

Laughter came from farther inside the house.

"We've got a full room tonight," she said. "Come meet everyone."

Six people stood around the kitchen island: a couple David recognized from the gala, another he did not, and a woman with a white thatch of hair and a bow tie. Copper pots hung above a stove with six burners.

"Everyone, this is David Hale, the head of Harbor Street, and Molly, who somehow keeps the place funded," Elaine said. "They're the school people I was telling you about."

There was a chorus of greetings. Someone took the wine. Someone else put a cold tumbler into David's hand.

"You're the bus people," the woman in the bow tie said. "Graham won't stop talking about you. Janet, by the way."

"The school," Elaine said. "Though Graham does like the buses."

"But the buses are the hook," Janet said. "Kids in your neighborhood really don't have other options?"

"Some do," David said. "A lot don't. There's no subway near most of our families. You have one parent working nights, one car, and three children going in different directions. The car breaks down and the whole arrangement goes with it."

"That's good," said a man in a navy sweater. Todd, David thought. "A whole social problem in one broken transmission."

"I'm not sure the families think of it as a hook," Molly said.

"No, of course not." Todd lifted his drink. "I only mean from our end. A check for a bus is wonderfully concrete. You know exactly what you bought."

"Diesel, mostly," David said.

They laughed, and he was relieved that they did.

Elaine touched his sleeve. "Graham's finishing a call in the dining room. We'll eat in fifteen minutes. There's cheese somewhere, unless Janet has failed me."

Molly went toward the platter at the end of the island. David stepped closer to the windows.

The hill dropped below the glass. Porch lights and streetlamps scattered across the darkening blocks. Somewhere beyond the ridge and the interstate were the streets where most of Harbor Street's students lived.

He thought of his own kitchen. The laminate pulling away beside the sink. The hinge he had been meaning to replace. Their son Nate's cereal bowl waiting on the table each morning beneath the bus schedule Molly had taped to the refrigerator.

"David."

Graham came up behind him. In person he looked the way his emails sounded: tall, silver-haired, easy without being careless.

"Sorry," he said. "Boston. We're all geniuses until interest rates rise."

He put a hand on David's shoulder.

"How are the buses?"

"They're running. We're praising God."

"Or diesel," Janet called.

"Same difference," Todd said.

"Not at Harbor Street, I hope," Graham said.

"We haven't revised the statement of faith yet," Molly said.

Graham grinned. "You'll do your bit after dinner?"

"I brought a short version."

"Perfect. Tell them what City Hall won't. Just don't make it so good they start calling me instead of you."

His tone was light. David watched him turn toward Elaine.

Graham's last gift paid the lease and fuel for Route Four, nineteen students from three neighborhoods west of the river. The pledge ended in June. Molly had already included its renewal in the draft budget because the bus company needed their answer before the next board meeting.

Dinner was served at a long table beneath a chandelier made of thin brass rods. There were place cards and linen napkins. At the top of each printed menu, someone had written ELBOW OF THE CITY in blue ink.

David sat between Molly and a woman from the university whose name left him almost as soon as she said it. Around the table, people explained how they knew Elaine and Graham, which boards they served on, where their children had gone to school. Someone described a hiking trip that required permits and shoes shipped from Germany.

David had met Graham at a breakfast downtown. Everyone else at the table had appeared to know one another already. When David mentioned the transportation problem, Graham stopped checking his phone. A week later he walked the halls of Harbor Street with David and Elena while children passed them in uniforms that were either too large or recently outgrown. Before he left, he wrote the first check on the front-office counter.

Elaine leaned toward David as the plates were cleared.

"Can I steal you for a toast? Dessert is almost ready."

He blotted a fleck of sauce from his tie and followed her to the end of the table.

"Friends," Elaine said, raising her glass.

The conversations faded.

"Thank you for coming. Some of you know Harbor Street and some of you don't, but all of you know my husband. He is terrible at asking for help for himself. He's slightly better when the help is for someone else."

Graham nodded in acknowledgment.

"Before David speaks, I want Graham to tell the story he told me after he first visited the school. The one about his father."

Graham lowered his head.

"You're going to make me do this?"

"Yes."

He remained seated, one hand around the stem of his glass.

"My father grew up in this city before the mills closed. When I was sixteen, he took me driving. We started near the house where he grew up. He showed me the corner where he used to wait in the morning with his hardhat, hoping one of the regular men wouldn't show up so he could get a shift."

Graham rubbed his thumb against the glass.

"He called it hustling. I figured out later it was begging."

No one moved.

"Then he drove me to the mall where he worked security after the plant closed. After that, he brought me up here. He parked somewhere close to this house and pointed down toward the river and the highways."

He gestured toward the windows.

"He called this bend the crook of the city's elbow. He said the city bent its arm around the hill and kept it safe. Then he drew an arm on a napkin and shaded in this side."

Graham paused.

"He told me that if I ever ended up here, I should remember the children on the other side. 'You send something back over,' he said."

Elaine raised her glass.

"To your father."

"To his father," someone repeated.

The glasses met around the table.

"And now," Elaine said, "David can tell us what the buses are doing."

David stood.

He told them about the grandmother who walked her grandson to the stop in bedroom slippers each morning, even in the rain. He told them about Jamir, who had attended three schools in two years before Route Four put Harbor Street within reach. He told them how children watched their own streets from the bus windows and how they knew which corners required silence.

He kept it under five minutes. He knew when to let the room laugh and when to stop talking.

He did not mention the morning Elena came into his office carrying the newsletter.

The applause was warm and brief. Then Elaine brought out a cake.

Later, after the dessert plates had been cleared and the candles had burned low, David found Molly in the kitchen. She was rinsing a pan at the sink although the open dishwasher beside her was almost empty.

"You did well," she said.

"I took out the line about the photocopier sounding like it was praying."

"I liked that line."

"It was too much."

She turned off the faucet.

"You used to tell people what happened at the school," she said. "Tonight you talked about runway and long-term capacity."

"That's what they understand."

"It's what Graham understands."

"It buys diesel."

"I know what it buys." She dried the pan and set it on the rack. "I'm the one who has to ask him for it."

From the dining room came another burst of laughter.

David looked toward the windows. "The story about his father carries the room."

"It should. It's a good story."

She folded the dish towel over the oven handle.

"I just don't want you bringing that voice home."

"What voice?"

"The one you use when you don't want anybody angry with you."

Before he could answer, Graham appeared in the doorway. His tie was loose, and he had replaced his wine with a glass of amber liquor.

"Am I interrupting a revolution?"

"Just cleaning your pan," Molly said.

Graham nodded toward the clay heart on the wall. "That little thing still gets me. You should use it in the pitch, David. The crack and the gold. It's like Elena's piece last month. I've been thinking about it ever since."

"You read the newsletter?" Molly asked.

"Every word."

"They all do," David said.

"You're cultivating dangerous people over there," Graham said.

"That's the idea," Molly said.

"Just don't make them so dangerous they stop riding the bus."

He smiled as he said it, then returned to the dining room.

Molly picked up the dish towel again.

David looked at the heart. The gold had pooled in one place near the bottom of the crack. Glitter remained trapped in the clay around the child's thumbprint.

Elena's face came back to him, along with the newsletter spread across his desk between them.

Three weeks earlier, on a gray Tuesday, Elena had knocked once and entered his office carrying dismissal forms in one hand and a crumpled printout in the other.

"Got a minute?"

He was halfway through an email to the finance chair, changing the word emergent to manageable. He closed the laptop.

"Always."

She sat across from him. Glitter-star stickers covered half of the photograph on her ID badge.

"There was an ICE raid at the packing plant at Fifty-First and Jackson last night," she said. "Families are texting me. Three of our parents work there. They're afraid to send their children to school."

"Were any of ours detained?"

"Not that I know of. One uncle. One older brother. A few people nobody can reach."

She put the newsletter draft on his desk. The header still said FAMILY UPDATE in cheerful teal.

"I wrote about it," she said. "I can't send out 'Family Game Night!' like nothing happened."

David read.

Sometimes evil arrives in a white van that looks like any other, Elena had written. It is driven by someone in a windbreaker on a street your children walk down every day.

The buses we run cannot stop what happened last night. But they can tell our families something simple: not every van is here to take someone away. Some are here to bring your children home.

Below that were Know Your Rights resources, the number for an immigration clinic, and a list of staff members who spoke Spanish.

At the bottom, set apart from the rest, she had written:

Some of our children's lives are being negotiated in rooms where no one who loves them is present.

"It's strong," he said.

"It's true."

She studied the last sentence.

"That one may be too much."

David read it again. Graham's name entered his mind before he could prevent it. Graham, two board members, the foundation officer who forwarded every newsletter to a committee of people David had never met.

"Once people read it, they can't claim they didn't know," he said.

"That's the point."

"I know."

She watched him tap the bottom of the page.

"What are you worried about?"

"When I was learning English," Elena said, "my teacher explained outside voices and inside voices. Things you said in the classroom and things you could say at home. She was trying to protect me."

She tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear.

"I've been translating myself ever since. The families don't need this translated."

"It could make you a target."

She looked down at the lanyard around her neck.

"My name's already printed."

They moved the final sentence farther down the page and left it alone. They kept ICE. They kept evil. David told himself that approving the piece was a choice.

The replies began before lunch.

Thank you for saying this.

Thank you for seeing us.

A donor asked how to contribute to the immigration clinic. A board member wrote only: Bold choice.

The following Monday, Graham's assistant emailed. Would David be available for a conversation about how he was holding everything?

Graham's office was on the twenty-first floor of a building downtown. The visitor chair had narrow wooden arms that kept David upright.

Graham sat across from him with a mug that read EARLY ADOPTER.

"You know why I asked you here."

"The newsletter."

Graham turned his monitor. Elena's piece filled the screen.

"My children were home for brunch. Grad school refugees. They had opinions."

He smiled.

"You'd like them. They're exactly the sort of people you're training over there. They read this and said, 'Dad, you understand you're the villain, right?'"

"I don't think Elena intended—"

"Oh, they meant me, not Elena."

Graham tapped the edge of the monitor.

"What I keep circling is that there's no acknowledgment here that the buses exist because people on this side pay for them. People like me."

"We are grateful."

"I know you're grateful. If I wanted my name over a door, I'd give to a hospital."

He turned the monitor back toward himself.

"My children aren't wrong to be suspicious. I watched the line move. The mill closed. The bus route changed. One year your best friend is sitting beside you at school and the next year he isn't, and nobody explains it."

He looked toward the window.

"You grow up thinking that if you get out, you'll send something back. What you don't see is that you're still the one holding the pen."

David could hear the ventilation system running above them.

Graham looked again at Elena's last sentence.

"I'm not asking you to rein her in. I like Elena. I'm asking what kind of culture you're building."

"The piece wasn't about donors."

"No. But it had a theory of the world. We're in it somewhere."

His voice remained even.

"I have a hard time paying to be the dragon in somebody else's story."

Route Four appeared in David's mind: the nineteen names on the manifest, Jamir in the third row, the contract waiting in Molly's inbox.

"I'll talk to Elena," David said. "We'll be more deliberate about the school's public voice."

Graham's expression did not change.

"I want the same thing you do," he said. "Children on buses. Lights on. Some conscience left."

He lifted the mug, and David understood that the meeting was over.

On the drive home from the dinner, rain streaked the windshield and turned the brake lights ahead of them into red smears.

"How did the meeting with Graham actually go?" Molly asked.

David had mentioned it when it happened, but only in pieces. He told her now that Graham admired Elena. He told her that Graham understood the criticism and wanted to remain part of the work.

"He wants us all telling the same story," David said.

"Are we?"

The wipers crossed the glass.

When they reached home, Nate was asleep. A half-built Lego tower stood on the floor beside his bed. David carried him to the pillow and pulled the blanket over his shoulders.

Then he went downstairs and opened his laptop at the kitchen table.

The house smelled of onions and dish soap. On the wall above him, attached with two pieces of crooked tape, was a drawing Nate had brought home from school. It showed a yellow bus with square wheels and five stick-figure faces in the windows.

David opened a new message.

Elena,

I've been thinking about the newsletter and the conversations it stirred up.

He stopped, then continued.

Families have told us how seen they felt. I don't want us to lose that.

He began the next paragraph.

Graham has asked whether he can continue supporting a school that casts people like him as part of the problem.

David read the sentence, selected it, and deleted it.

Some of our partners have asked where they fit in stories like this. Are they part of what we are naming or part of the response?

He added:

I told them that supporting the school does not give them the right to decide what our families or staff are permitted to say.

At the same time, I think we need to be deliberate about the school's public voice and about how we support one another when there is pushback. I should have had that conversation with you before the piece went out.

Can we sit down Thursday?

He moved the cursor to the second paragraph and considered replacing partners with donors.

He left it as it was.

Then he clicked SEND.

The screen returned to his inbox. David closed the laptop.

On Nate's drawing, the bus tilted toward the edge of the page. In the rectangle above the windshield, where the route number should have been, Nate had written HOME.
